Corporate Giants Get Virtual Worlds
By: Karl M. Kapp, assistant director at the Institute for Interactive Technologies, and professor of instructional technology at Bloomsburg University, and co-author of Learning in 3D
Virtual immersive environments (VIEs) for corporate use gains traction in 2010 with major announcements concerning integration with traditional enterprisewide software, such as MS SharePoint. Tips of the Month
Commitment Curve
By Tyler Huggins, Instructor & Consultant
When a new employee joins an organization, they usually start with all the optimism in the world. They are entering a new company with great potential, and no identified flaws. At this point, their commitment to the company is high. At the same time, the boss may not be sure of the new employee yet, and thus their own commitment to that person may have limitations. Some time later, the employee may start to notice that their new place of employment has flaws, and while their competence is now on the rise, their commitment may be starting a downward trend. Meanwhile, the boss is starting to be more committed to the employee, because they are seeing an improvement in performance and ability.
Do you see the gap in commitment?
If the gap is not addressed, the relationship may be headed for failure. It is important for the boss to let the employee know that employees will go through this commitment curve, and arrange to have supportive communication surrounding that. Only then, when the employee’s commitment and optimism are on the wane, will the employee feel free to open up about their concerns, thus giving the boss an opportunity to address their unease, and seek to preserve the relationship.

For a quick and easy way to create an exact copy of any sheet you have in a workbook:
Click and drag the sheet you would like to copy, towards either the left or right, until you see a small arrowhead. While you are doing this, hold down the Ctrl key. When you release your mouse button, you will find an exact copy of the sheet with the same name along with the number 2 beside it.

Spring-loaded tools
In CS4, you can temporarily jump from any tool to any other tool by pressing-and-holding the other tool’s shortcut. For instance, to jump from the Brush tool to the new Rotate View tool, just hold down R, click-and-drag the canvas to rotate it, and then release R to jump back to the Brush. Although it saves just one click at a time, those clicks can add up. |
