Our New Technical Instructor: Scott Jackson

We would like to welcome Scott Jackson as our Lead Technical Instructor for Microsoft Development and Database training. With twelve years experience in the IT sector, Scott has achieved both his MCPD and MCT Certifications.

Working within large software distribution companies and smaller development shops, Scott has taken on many roles from Trainer to Senior Developer to Technical Lead. As a veteran Microsoft instructor, Scott combines practical industry experience with fundamental theories in his classroom and looks forward to teaching upcoming Microsoft technologies such as .Net 4.0 and SharePoint 2010!

In his spare time, Scott enjoys spending time with his family (he has a 2 year old son and one on the way!),  travel both near and far, and playing with new technologies.

New Courses: People Using Language Skills Effectively Program

New Era is very excited to announce its partnership with the PULSE Institute. PULSE was established in 2002 by Dr. Nancy Love to help People Use Language Skills Effectively and improve relationships around them. The PULSE program has helped people all over North America, in both small and large Fortune 500 companies, to understand how to faciliate effective conversations.

Starting in the January, New Era will be offering the PULSE program!

PULSE Concepts

Jan. 28-29, 2010

This course that will introduce you to the PULSE framework. During this course, you will develop deeper insight into yourself and others while engaged in conflict and under stress. You will learn best case practices to facilitate three-way conversations while you remain neutral and empower others to resolve their differences.

PULSE Practice

Feb. 24-26, 2010

This course engages in a deeper, experiential examination of each aspect of the PULSE framework. This practical application of the principals will allow you as a student to build confidence in using PULSE for yourself, through exercises, role plays, videos, and the use of coaches as you come to understand the true intent of each step. This three-day course will certify you as a PULSE practitioner.

Golden Rule to Platinum Rule

There was an episode of the Simpson’s where Homer bought Marge a bowling ball for her birthday. Homer loved bowling.  Marge had never bowled in her life. To view this in the best possible light, Homer was exhibiting a twisted form of the Golden Rule.  We all may know someone who buys gifts for people based on what they like for themselves.  We can think of the mom who buys a sweater for her daughter with a style that the mom likes on the daughter, when the daughter prefers a different style. 

Many of us can repeat this same mistake when we communicate with others.  We may present our thoughts in a way that appeals to us.  We are ‘doing to them, as we would have done unto us’.  But if we look at this rule a bit more deeply, we may start to see that what we really want ‘done to us’ is what matches with our own preferences – and that really is what we all want – to be appealed to on our own level.  If we can elevate our ‘golden rule’ to a platinum rule of ‘do unto others as they would have done unto them’ we are much more likely to build relationships, get buy-in, and reduce conflict. Of course, this opens our eyes to the need for all sorts of communication skills.  We start to see how we need to have ways to find out more about the people around us, so that can appeal to them in the way that works best for them.

Photoshop: Layer Blending Modes
Open up the layers palette, select a layer and click the downwards arrow where it says Normal. Try experimenting with different blending modes on different layers, put layers above or below other layers, change the opacity and so fourth and you will be amazed!
