Wikis: Learning Tools for Web 2.0

CLOs and training managers have witnessed the recent popularity of Web 2.0 technologies, such as wikis, blogs, and podcasts. As organizations struggle to retain and enhance workforce knowledge and manage an increasing information flow, wikis are already playing a crucial role. However, with traditional learning paradigms still prevalent, are these new technologies appropriate for your business, and how can you best integrate them with your program?

It is crucial to understand wikis in the Web 2.0 technological and cultural context, as well as current business, learning, and performance support contexts. As you’ll discover, there are many important questions and options that need to be considered before an organization can realize the true potential of wiki technology.

Tips of the Month

Setting Goals and Reaching Them

By: Tyler Huggins

Whenever you set a goal (personally, or organizationally), you need to define what “success” is going to look like – define the specific detailed aspects of it.  Once we break it down to that point, it will be easier to recognize.  This also has the added benefit of allowing us to see success (or lack thereof) at an earlier stage, (rather than only at the end of an undertaking) and adapt as needed.  Now that we know what success will look like (in small increments), we want to be sure to reward it.  We can do that in a number of ways:

  • Have a team ‘success board’ and/or calendar (virtual or physical or both).
  • Have staff meetings include success stories (your own, or others)
  • Incentives - monetary rewards, work benefits or concessions, perks, treats, etc.

Be creative, have fun with it, but make sure the rewards are commensurate with the success and don’t undermine your goal.  (For instance, eating a chocolate cake to celebrate a successful day of healthy eating, or buying a Porsche to celebrate re-organizing your desk space would each be unreasonable)
Some might say “hey, it’s my job to make sure I have success, I shouldn’t need extra pats on the back or opportunities to blow my own horn.”  Well, that is true to a large extent - but what can happen with this mind set, is that if you aren’t recognizing small successes, you also may not recognize times when you need to make adjustments.  It’s not just about bragging rights, but about monitoring all progress along the way.

In Word 2003 or 2007:

If you want to quickly apply double spacing to a document:

  1.  Press Ctrl+A to select all the text
  2. Press Ctrl+2 to apply double spacing (you can also try Ctrl + 1 which will apply single spacing, and Ctrl+5 which will apply one and a half line spacing)

Skip the New Document Dialog Box
To create a new InDesign document without summoning the New Document Dialog Box, add the Opt/Alt key to the Cmd/Ctrl-N keyboard shortcut. The resulting new document will be based on whatever setting you last chose in the New Document dialog box’s Document Preset pop-up menu.
