Tips of the Month |
How to Communicate Effectively
By: Tyler Huggins
Researchers say that in face to face conversations, only 7% of our message is delivered via the words we choose. The remaining 93% breaks down to 38% from our tone, and 55% from our body language. This can help explain a few things. For one, there is more opportunity for mis-understanding over the phone and over email because we are lacking one or two components. That puts an onus on us to be that much more thoughtful when choosing our words on paper, or on the phone.
The flipside of all this, is that our body language and gestures are some of the most easily misinterpreted parts of communication. While we may feel certain that a person intended a particular feeling because of a specific gesture or stance, or a certain tone, the fact is that there is a good chance that we are wrong. It is quite likely, especially in the case of a negative interpretation, that the person was not aware that they were conveying that message.
The lessons for us?
1. Be aware of the messages you are sending by your stance, gestures or tone – they may be interpreted differently by different people, and particularly by different cultures.
2. Give people the benefit of the doubt when you have communication with them. The bad vibe you get over an email may be due to not having tone or body language available to you, and the bad vibe you get in person could be due to your own frame of reference that leads you to misinterpret their body language. |
