How to Manage Your Time Effectively

By: Tyler Huggins
Time Saving

Time Management: Getting a lot done is only one aspect.  If you get a lot done, but you feel stressed and out of breath, then you are only accomplishing half of what a good time management system should do.

One of the key factors in a good time management system is trust.  David Allen makes this a prominent point in his book “Getting things Done.”  When most people drive their car, they aren’t in a constant state of worry about whether they will get into an accident, yet many people spend much of their day worrying about the task list they face.  They may wonder if they have forgotten something, or wonder how they will fit it all in, or they may be giving themselves constant reminders of additional tasks that they “mustn’t forget”.

Why is that?  Well, the most likely reason is a lack of trust somewhere.  Do they truly trust their system of capturing, monitoring and prioritizing their projects and tasks?  Do they trust those scraps of paper they have scribbled lists onto?  Do they trust their calendar to remind them of obligations at the right times?  Do they trust the people they delegate to?  The secret is to get a constantly reliable system that captures everything.  That system has to be available at any place and any time, so that when something occurs to you, you can get it out of your head, and into your trusted system – then you can relax, knowing it has started down the road to completion.  Outlook is an example of one system that can cover all of this.

Just as you trust that you will get from point A to point B in your car, you need to have a system that lets you trust that once you get something into it, it will take it from start to completion – then your mind can rest, and you can truly focus on and enjoy the moment that you are in.
